How cannabis may help ease Parkinson’s disease

Every single hour, two people in the UK are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), the world’s fastest growing neurological condition that currently has no cure. With an estimated 8.5 million people facing this incurable diagnosis across the world, increasing numbers of Parkinson’s patients are turning to medicinal cannabis to help potentially manage tremors and rigidity, relieve the symptoms of anxiety that can go hand in hand with the diagnosis, and improve their sleep quality.

A word from our specialist

"Neurological conditions are many and varied in how they can affect us. The more recognised conditions that are treatable with medical cannabis include epilepsy, where CBD mimics the action of the many anti-epileptic drugs; and multiple sclerosis, which the NHS can prescribe Sativex for. Medical Cannabis offers greater flexibility in the delivery of cannabinoid therapy for these conditions and hope in other areas of neurology, such as in the neurodegenerative conditions and the motor disorders."

Can medical cannabis be used to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s?

Because medical cannabis was only legalised in the UK in 2018, clinical investigation into its uses and benefits in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease are still ongoing, and although there have been promising findings, research in this area is still limited.

Currently, patients who have been unable to manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s using conventionally prescribed licensed treatments, may be considered eligible for cannabis-based Parkinson’s treatment plans with Releaf.

This is because real life evidence such as responses in patient surveys have displayed positive findings for the use of medical cannabis in the treatment of Parkinson’s symptoms, such as pain, tremors, poor sleep and low mood. These treatments may be able to aid those who have been unable to manage these symptoms with conventionally prescribed options.

While clinical investigations are still ongoing, it's important that medical cannabis Parkinson’s treatments are closely monitored by qualified healthcare professionals.

At Releaf, our team of specialist doctors can adapt or adjust the concentration and  formulation of cannabis-based medicines, to best suit each individual patient, and can recommend dosing routines that won't disrupt day to day activities.
